01 / The name
Why Sigil
A sigil is a symbol drawn to give an intention a form; the word derives from the Latin sigillum, a seal. The name reflects the aim of our engineering: work that once demanded constant effort and attention is made to run reliably in the background, largely unnoticed by the people who depend on it.1
The method behind it is research, design and rigorous testing.
1. The name also nods to Arthur C. Clarke's third law, that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
02 / The mark
An algorithmic mark
Our mark, and the mark of every product we develop, is generated by an algorithm rather than drawn by hand. One fixed procedure turns a name into a seal, so each product carries a distinct mark from the same family.
The approach reflects how we build products. Work that is important but time-consuming is automated wherever a well-designed procedure can perform it reliably, and human judgement is reserved for the decisions that require it: the procedure generates and evaluates every candidate seal, and the final choice is made by eye. Applied with rigour, automation of this kind does not trade quality for speed; it raises the standard of the result.

Every project begins with a precise understanding of the problem and the people it affects. Technology is selected to fit that understanding, not the reverse.

Software should absorb repetitive, time-consuming work so that skilled staff can focus where they add value. In Sous, finding cover for a call-out, contacting staff and confirming the shift no longer require a manager's time.

Software that businesses depend on must behave predictably when conditions are not ideal. Our systems are designed for missed messages, late responses and simultaneous replies, not only the expected path.
